Plant your love and let it grow     Let It Grow / Eric Clapton           ▒ [기타의 신]이라 불리는 Eric Clapton에 대하여..   1945년 영국 서리주(州)의 리플리(ripley)에서 태어났으며, 본명은 에릭 패트릭 클랩튼 (Eric Patrick Clapton)이다. 십대 때부터 기타를 연주하였고 잠시 동안 킹스턴 예술학교(Kingston College of Art)에 다녔다. 루스터스(the Roosters)라는 밴드에서 리드기타를 연주하다가 1963년 리듬앤드블루스 그룹인 야드버즈(the Yardbirds)에 가담하였으며 이때부터 블루스 스타일의 연주 기법이 주목을 받기 시작하였다. 1965년에는 존 메이올(John Mayall)이 이끄는 블루스브레이커스(Bluesbreakers)에 가담하였다. 이 당시 런던 시내에 [클랩튼은 신이다(Clapton Is God)]라는 낙서가 나돌 정도로 큰 인기를 얻었으며 [슬로 핸드(Slowhand)]라는 닉네임을 얻었다. 1966년에 잭 브루스(Jack Bruce), 진저 베이커(Ginger Baker)와 함께 크림(Cream)을 결성하여 록과 블루스가 혼합된 사이키델릭팝으로 세계적인 인기를 누렸다. 《크로스로즈 Crossroads》, 《화이트 룸 White Room》과 같은 곡에 삽입된 그의 기타 연주는 록 기타 독주의 전형이 되었다. 크림은 이후 《디즈레일리 기어스 Disraeli Gears》(1967), 《휠스 오브 파이어 Wheels of Fire》(1968), 《굿바이 Goodbye》(1969) 등의 앨범을 낸 뒤 해체되었다. 1969년에는 블라인드 페이스(Blind Faith)라는 그룹을 결성하였으나 한장의 앨범 만을 냈으며, 1970년 첫 솔로 앨범을 내면서 가수로서도 인정받았다. 이어 데릭 앤드 더 도미노스(Derek and the Dominos)라는 그룹을 조직하여 리드기타와 보컬 및 작곡을 맡았다. 그해 8월에 기타 연주자 듀에인 올먼(Duane Allman)과 함께 만든 더블 앨범 《레일라 앤드 아더 어소티드 러브 송스 Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs》는 록음악의 기념비적 작품으로 여겨지고 있다.   이후 헤로인 중독으로 2년 동안 활동을 중단하였다가 1974년 《461 오션 불러바드 461 Ocean Boulevard》를 발표하였으며 여기에 수록된 밥 말리(Bob Marley)의 《아이 샷 더 셰리프 I Shot the Sheriff》를 리메이크한 곡이 정상에 오르는 등 성공적으로 재기했다. 이 앨범에서는 그의 기타 연주보다 작곡 및 가창력이 강조되었다. 그후 《슬로우핸드 Slowhand》(1977), 《백클리스 Backless》 (1978), 《머니 앤드 시가레츠 Money and Cigarettes》(1983), 《오거스트 August》(1986) 등의 앨범을 냈다. 1990년대 들어서도 《언플러그드 Unplugged》(1992), 《프롬 더 크래들 From the Cradle》(1994), 《필그림 Pilgrim》(1998) 등의 앨범을 냈으며 《티어즈 인 헤븐 Tears in Heaven》, 《체인지 더 월드 Change the World》, 《마이 파더스 아이스 My Father's Eyes》 등의 곡이 히트했다. 세계 각지에서 활발한 공연을 하고 있으며 1997년 10월 서울에서도 공연하였다. 그의 많은 앨범들은 비평가들의 찬사와 함께 상업적으로도 성공하였고, [기타의 신]이라 불리며 록음악 특히 블루스록 분야에서 가장 위대한 음악가 중 한 사람으로 평가받는다. 로큰롤 명예의 전당(Rock and Roll Hall of Fame)에 1992년에는 야드버즈의 일원으로, 1993년에는 크림의 일원으로, 2000년에는 솔로 아티스트로 [공연자(performers)] 부문에 오르는 등 총 3차례나 헌액되었다.     ▒ Give me strength / Eric Clapton Dear Lord,give me strength to carry on.
